Ah! Jersey knits! We can't help but to love them! Jersey is a knitted fabric that is lightweight and drapes beautifully. Jersey is comfortable and forgiving, making it a sewist's best friend.
This comfortable and stretchy fabric has, in principle, been around since medieval times, but was made popular in daily outer wear by the ever glamorous Coco Chanel. Jersey knit is now found abundantly in every wardrobe as tee shirts, dresses, skirts, you name it, you can find it made out of comfortable jersey! We've heard that some sewists are timid when it comes to sewing with this dynamic material, and we say: Don't be! There are only two hard and fast rules of sewing with jersey knits.
1) Make sure that the direction of stretch is horizontal <-stretch->
2) Any seam/hem that needs to remain stretchy should be done with a zigzag stitch. all other seams can be sewn normally.
That's it! Of course, a ball point needle doesn't hurt either...
